LABIAPLASTY FAQ

Why get a labiaplasty?

There are many reasons why getting a labiaplasty can benefit you. When you have excess tissue, it can cause discomfort during different activities. For example, if you are an athlete, you may find that labial tissue can protrude when sitting on an exercise bike. The labia can be obvious in tight-fitting outfits like yoga pants. The sweating and rubbing while running or biking can cause discomfort or pain. It may even discourage you from maintaining a regular exercise routine.

Furthermore, labia tissue that is too large or distended can create distress, even when you are sitting for extended periods or during long car rides.

Of course, the labia tissue can cause pain during sexual intercourse. Having a concern about the appearance of your labia can lead to being self-conscious and decreased sexual satisfaction. A labiaplasty procedure can result in improved self-image and sexual satisfaction with a partner.

An enlarged labia tissue can also impede urination and make the stream of urine not flow straight. An experienced surgeon can move the excess flaps of the labia minora, out of the way to resolve this problem.

Here are the five major reasons why women decide to get a labiaplasty:

  • Chronic irritation when wearing certain types of clothes or swimwear
  • Dark pigmentation on the edges of their labia minora
  • Embarrassment over the size of their labia
  • Low self-esteem and feeling self-conscious about their labia
  • Pain like pulling and pinching during physical and sexual activities

A labiaplasty will help provide comfort when you are active in physical activities and can improve your self-esteem in the process. When it is affecting the quality of your life, why not consider labiaplasty for all the reasons listed above? It will make you feel more comfortable and confident no matter what activities you are involved with.

What are the results of labiaplasty?

The results are permanent and usually require no need for follow-up appointments. This is a one-time procedure. Labiaplasty surgery is associated with a high satisfaction rate, according to multiple studies, of over 90 percent.

When can I have sex after a labiaplasty?

The recommended wait time is about six weeks to give your body a chance to recover and heal properly.

Does labiaplasty hurt?

Labiaplasty, as an outpatient procedure (meaning you don’t stay at the hospital overnight afterward), can be done under general anesthesia or a combination of sedation and local anesthesia. The labia and vagina are sensitive areas. If you have a labiaplasty, your vulva will be sore and swollen. You can also take measures to reduce the pain such as a warm sitz bath or application of cold presses to the area to reduce swelling.

Will there be a scar after labiaplasty?

Most scars are integrated into the labial tissue’s wrinkles and folds.

What are the risks of labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure with possible risks like any other. These can include bruising, infection, pain, scarring, swelling, or possible changes in sensation.

Do I need to wait until I’m done having children before getting a labiaplasty?

No, child-bearing does not affect your labia as long as you have completely healed.

What is the recovery after labiaplasty?

Every woman will recover in her way and her own time. On average, most patients take a week off from work, depending on the type of work that you do. Plan on six weeks or so before resume your regular exercise routine and sexual activities.

It will be helpful to wear loose clothing, especially bottoms and sit on a soft pillow. You should drink plenty of water and pee in a warm shower if urination becomes too painful. Keep in mind it will be uncomfortable to urinate and sit during your recovery. Staying off your feet will help to decrease swelling.
